In the first league game of the 2016 season, senior left-handed pitcher Joe LaSorsa threw a no-hitter in the 3-0 win.
The Gaels opened up the season on April 1 against All Hallows at home on Petrillo Field. Joe LaSorsa had 10 strikeouts and also went 1-3 at the plate in the win.
Senior catcher Chris Dutra not only called a great game behind the plate, but also drove in a run with a base hit to left field in the fifth inning. Junior third basemen Mike Gorman was 1-2 with 2 RBI's. Sam Roque and Christian Rosell also went 1-3 on the day to help lead the Gaels offense.
LaSorsa threw 84 total pitches in the no-hitter with 62 strikes in a dominant performance. The Gaels have Regis next.
The Gaels open their season April 1, but the team has been hard at work for a while now. Check out the highlights from this year's Spring Training trip to Fort Pierce, Fla. where the Prep took part in three practices and six scrimmages – including one each against fellow Westchester ballclubs Fox Lane, Harrison and Pleasantville.
Ty Jerome scores vs. Christ the King who is the defending CHSAA Champs. The team went on to win 69-64 in front of a sellout crowd in an absolute thriller of a game. Jerome, who is committed to UVA next year went on to score 37 points and grab 7 rebounds in the win. The crowd was great all night and loved what they saw from Jerome and his teammates. Ty Jerome was named Iona Prep Athlete of the week and Journal News Basketball Player of the week as well.
The Iona Prep Gaels will take on Christ the King this Friday, Dec. 4, in a freshman (4:30 p.m.), jayvee (6 p.m.) and varsity (7:30 p.m.) basketball triple-header. Hear Class of 2001 alumnus Pat Quinn share his story and talk about ALS during halftime of each game. There will also be giveaways, raffles and a half-court shot!
Members of the Student-Faculty Council have been selling $10 Iona Prep #QuinnForTheWin T-shirts all week to fundraise for their fellow Gael. Those T-shirts can be worn over their button-downs and ties on Friday as a show of support for Quinn.
