Mr. Bernard Mahoney
Mr. Mahoney is a 1973 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, where he played four years of baseball and was team captain in his senior year. He began his teaching and coaching career in 1973 at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine in the Bronx. During his six years at Tolentine, he taught physical education and health as well as coaching freshmen basketball and varsity baseball. He was named their athletic director in 1979.
In 1980, Mr. Mahoney moved on to Mount Saint Michael Academy, where he worked for 25 years. In his first three years at Mount, he coached junior varsity basketball and during those three years was the varsity baseball coach here at Iona Prep. In 1983 he became the athletic director and varsity baseball coach at Mount. During his time at Mount Saint Michael he also taught physical education and for twelve years was the dean of students. His 2000 baseball team captured the CHSAA City Championship. That team produced ten players’ who went on to play college baseball and two who were drafted by Major League Baseball.
In 2004, he came to Iona Prep as director of athletics and facilities. In 2008, he was elected to the Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Nance, reside in Patterson, New York with their sons Collin, Kyle, and Ryan, who is now Iona Preparatory’s Dean of Students and varsity baseball coach.
