School Counseling Department
Welcome to the School Counseling website. The primary purpose of the website is to provide a snapshot of the department in terms of the services, events and people to contact.

Using both classroom settings, individual meetings and small groups (occasionally), school counselors reach out to our freshmen students to assist them in acclimating to high school, enhancing their academic, personal and social skills and preparing for their post-graduation. In sophomore year, the relationship continues to develop using personal and career issues as a springboard. Junior and senior year efforts are directed at college preparation, selection and application as well as other post-secondary goals.

The School Counseling Program at Iona Prep is comprehensive and developmental.  A student is assigned a school counselor who will remain with them during the student's tenure.  The additional service of a college counselor is provided in the second half of junior year.  While the college counselors are most closely connected to juniors, seniors and their families, the college counselors are invested in all of the Iona Prep students beginning in ninth grade. Iona Prep has an extensive history of 100% college acceptance. Certainly this is a testament to our entire educational experience; however, it is the college counselor who assists families in the final process of developing a strategy for applying and attending college.

The School Social Worker works with students in all four years. The social worker does outreach to make students aware of the services available to them. Seniors struggling with the transition from high school to college to freshmen looking to make new friendships are just two of the themes the school social worker engages students in. The Social Worker will also provide one-on-one and small group counseling for students who have been appropriately referred for family, social, substance abuse or other developmental issues.

I hope that you find the website informative and easy to navigate. Please contact any of the counselors with questions related to the web page.

Sincerely,
Terence J. Houlihan
