Gridiron Gaels Fleming, Panker Make College Commitments; Bring Total Signees to 12 This Year
Iona Preparatory School’s Sean Fleming LS'15, US'19 and Matt Panker '19 signed Letters of Intent to play collegiate football as part of National Signing Day on Dec. 19, 2018. This was the first event at which high school football players could commit to college teams, bringing Iona Preparatory’s total commitments to 12 so far this year, including nine Division I programs.
Fleming, of Dobbs Ferry, committed to play football at Monmouth University (DI). Fleming is a three-year Varsity starter and a member of the 2016 AA Championship team. He is also a 2018 Catholic High School Football League All-League and 1st-Team LoHud All-Star. Additionally, he helped lead the Lower School's eighth-grade basketball team to the CYO state championship in 2015.
Panker, of Hawthorne, committed to play both football and baseball for Colby College (DIII). He is a 2018 2nd-Team Lohud All-Star, 2018 Catholic High School Football League Golden 11 Award Winner and a Golden Dozen Honorable Mention by the Westchester Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
“There’s a lot of great days to be a Gael, and this is clearly one of them,” said Athletic Director Bernard A. Mahoney. “It takes a lot of hard work, sacrifice and dedication to get to this point, and we know this is still just the start of great things to come for these young men.”
Last year, the Gaels had a total of 31 scholar-athletes commit to play college sports, including 17 Division I signings to schools such as Brown, MIT and Stanford. In all, 550 scholar-athletes participated in at least one sport, with a remarkable 90.25 overall GPA.
