The Passing of Mary Verni P'80,'81,'85, GP'08,'13,'14

It is with immense sadness that we must share news of the passing of an Iona Preparatory legend, Mrs. Mary Louise Verni P'80,'81,'85, GP'08,'13,'14, who died July 28. She was 79.

Mrs. Verni's legacy is one of active involvement. She and her husband, Vito, sent their three sons--John LS'76, US'80, Paul '81 and Christopher '85--to the Prep. While Vito served on the Upper School Board of Directors, Mary was the first elected chair of the then-Iona Grammar School Board of Directors in 1990. She worked tirelessly with our Mothers' Auxiliary, and was recognized for her many contributions in 2011 with the Emerald Isle Heart Award.

Following their son Paul's tragic passing in October 1982, it was Mary and Vito who led the charge to construct the Paul Verni Fine Arts Center on campus. Paul was the valedictorian of his class, a gifted athlete and talented artist. The Verni Center, which will be expanded in the summer of 2019 thanks to yet another generous gift from Mary and Vito, was erected in 1986 to provide a learning environment for the artistic expression of Iona men.

Until God called her home, Mary was one of the staunchest supporters of Christian Brothers education and among Iona Prep's most ardent cheerleaders. Always engaging and sharing Gael news on social media, she will be greatly missed by family and friends and remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

We ask that your thoughts and prayers be with Mary's family and friends during this difficult time, especially Vito, John and Chris; daughters-in-law Karina and Kate; grandchildren John Jr. '08, Marielle, Paul '13, Charlie '14, Zoe, Nick and Alex; and siblings Stephen LaSala (Joan), Paula Lefebvre (David) and Andrew LaSala (Diane). For those wishing to pay their respects, the arrangements are as follows:
