Your Track & Field Gaels are Catholic State Champs!

A week after winning the Westchester County Championship by more than doubling the runner-up's total, the track and field team became Catholic State champions by a single point on the final race of the meet. It was the Gaels' first outdoor title since 1987.

It was as impressive a meet as the team has had all season, particularly considering the 40 schools competing and the fact that students can only compete in a maximum of two events. Each Gael did his part as the Gaels eked out a 41-40 win over silver medalist Xavier in the 90th Annual Catholic State Varsity Intersectionals.

Iona Prep produced five individual champions, with senior Robert Greer defending his 2017 title in the javelin with a throw of 185 feet, tops in all of New York State and a school record, as well as the No. 5 throw all-time in Westchester County. The No. 2 sophomore in New York State, Pedro Bravo finished first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:37.53, while senior Connor Shea hurdled a 55.46 time to win his event, as well as the No. 2 all-time Iona Prep record and 13th best time in the state. Junior Louis Logsdail pole vaulted the 15-foot mark for the top junior and fourth-best overall mark in New York, to go along with the fifth-best height in Iona Prep history and 11th all-time in Westchester County. Rounding out the individual state champions was senior Luke Tobia, who dropped the hammer by winning the hammer throw Catholic state title.
