Minheng Gong, Math Team win Catholic Math League National Title

Iona Preparatory continues to be the home of champions, and that moniker isn't limited to the playing fields. The Gaels' Algebra 2 Math Team is currently the best in the country, with eleven students among the top 40, including national champion Minheng "Kevin" Gong.

According to its website, the Catholic Math League is a national competition and mathematical tool, established in 1997, "that is used by hundreds of Catholic schools throughout the nation to aid in the development of the mathematical skills in the lives of their students." Competitions are offered from third grade on, and include a battery of four tests per level in November, December, February and March.

For the second year in a row, the Iona Preparatory team won the Division 3, Algebra 2 title, while taking top honors in all of the United States this spring. All juniors, Gong was joined by Yixiang "Bill" Kong and Litian Zhang, who were third and seventh in the nation, respectively.

Gong finished the four-test competition with a score of 98 to become a national champion. Iona Preparatory had an overall score of 293, besting the national runner-up by 30 points.
