Alumni Hockey Game proves special for one father-son combo

Twenty-five Gaels came out and skated in the Alumni Ice Hockey Game on Dec. 27, and proved there were gifts yet to be given as 16 goals were scored in the fun and friendly game. Among those on the ice were three parents of current players and, for perhaps the very first time ever, a father-son alumni duo.

Robert J. Cagliero, Jr. '78 has played in many Alumni Hockey Games over the years, but Dec. 27 marked the first time he could do so with his Class of 2013 son, Robert J. Cagliero III.

Bob got his son into the game around 7 years old and coached him into his early teens. He even coached one Iona Prep game during a cameo performance several years back. While they've occasionally played together during Bob's pick-up games, this was the first time they've donned the Maroon & Gold side-by-side.

"We had a great time playing as a defensive pair," Cagliero, Jr. said.

Cagliero III is presently studying mechanical engineering at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering & Computer Science at Syracuse University.

Following the alumni game, in which White defeated Maroon 10-6, many of the Gaels gathered at Rockwell's in pelham for a hearty meal before returning to the Ice Hutch for the Iona Prep-Fordham Prep game. The current parents who suited up for the alumni game were Joe Chimenti P'15, Dean Cingolani P'12,'15 and junior varsity coach Mike Lyons P'15.
